How to track UK gaming influencer promo codes and affiliate links
A UK measurement guide to tracking gaming influencer promo codes and affiliate links across affiliate networks, unique sub-IDs and redemption checks.
What to take away
- Track two events separatelythe click on an affiliate link and the redemption of a promo code.
- Give every creator a unique code and a network sub-ID, then record both against the same campaign name.
- Use the network's server postback where possible, because browser cookies drop on some gaming storefronts.
- Reconcile redemptions each week against the network report, and keep the customer record lawful.
- Keep every affiliate tracking labelcreator, platform and campaign month — in one tracker, so the network report can be joined back to the brief.
Start with the link path, not the code
In affiliate marketing, a link earns commission when a tracked click leads to a sale.
Link path to commission
- Creator posts link with tracking parameter
- Viewer clicks tracked link
- Network records click ID
- Retailer reports conversion
- Creator earns commission
A YouTube description link, a Twitch chat command and a pinned TikTok comment can all point to the same product page. Each path needs its own tracking parameter, otherwise the network report merges them.
Set each placement to suit the platform. On YouTube, put the tracked link in the video description and repeat the code in the pinned comment. On Twitch, keep the link in a panel and a chat command, and have the creator say the code aloud on stream. On TikTok, the link goes in the bio and the code in the pinned comment, because captions themselves are not clickable.
A promo code works at checkout, so it can capture sales that the link did not. The code should be unique to the creator and campaign. Do not reuse last year's code, unless you want last year's sales in this year's report.
Affiliate income is one of several gaming creator business models, and it carries different tracking needs from sponsorship.
Map UK networks and retailer rules
Most UK gaming campaigns sit inside an affiliate network, a retailer's own programme or a platform's creator marketplace. The networks you will meet most often are Awin, CJ, Impact, Rakuten Advertising, Tradedoubler, Webgains and Partnerize. The retailer side is usually a UK storefront such as GAME, Currys, Argos or Amazon UK, or a first-party store such as the Microsoft Store, the PlayStation Store, the Nintendo eShop or Steam.
The network passes a click ID to the retailer, and the retailer returns a conversion file that typically carries the click ID, your sub-ID, the order reference, the order value, the status and the date. Programme terms vary, so check whether the retailer pays commission on voucher-code sales at all and whether console store purchases are in scope. Your job is to match that file to the creator.
Briefing a creator
Does the network support sub-IDs?
use sub-IDs for creator, platform, campaign
use unique promo codes instead
Ask three questions before you brief a creator. Does the network support sub-IDs? Does the retailer accept voucher codes in the same report? And does the programme pay commission on the tracked click, on the code redemption, or on both?
Use unique codes and sub-IDs
A sub-ID is a free text field on the affiliate link. Use it for the creator handle, the platform and the campaign month. Keep the structure short, because some networks limit characters, and avoid personal data such as an email address in the field, because the link is public.
A worked example: handle-yt-202605. The handle names the creator, yt, tw and tt mark YouTube, Twitch and TikTok, and the six digits give the campaign year and month.
What it proves
- Unique promo code
- A redemption happened
- Affiliate link with sub-ID
- A tracked click led to a sale
- Server postback
- The retailer confirmed the event
- Survey question
- Self-reported influence
Main weakness
- Unique promo code
- Cannot show who saw the post
- Affiliate link with sub-ID
- Cookies drop or are blocked
- Server postback
- Needs technical setup
- Survey question
- Recall is weak at scale
Pair the code with the link. If a viewer clicks the link and later types the code, the network may report only one event. Decide in advance which event owns the sale, and write that rule in the campaign brief.
Attribute redemption without breaking data rules
Promo code attribution gaming often touches personal data. A redemption record can include an email address, a platform ID or a delivery postcode. You need a lawful basis for holding that data and a retention period.
The rules that apply are the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and the ICO is the regulator that enforces them. The ICO's guide to data protection sets out the accountability principle and the information you must give people.
Keep the affiliate report separate from your CRM export until you have a documented match key. If you join them by hand in a spreadsheet, you risk linking the wrong person to the wrong code.
Check disclosure and platform rules
A paid promo code is an ad. The CAP Code requires that marketing communications are obviously identifiable as such. A creator should label the post before the viewer reaches the code.
The ASA advertising codes explain the labelling rules that apply across UK media.
Build a weekly reconciliation
Keep the tracker aligned with your wider approach to choosing gaming creator metrics, so a promo code result does not sit apart from reach and watch time. A spreadsheet is enough to start; GA4 or an affiliate tracking platform such as Voluum or RedTrack can hold the sub-ID next to the click once the volume grows.
- Export the affiliate network report and the retailer's redemption file for the same date range, keeping the sub-ID, click ID, order reference, order value, status and redemption date columns.
- Match every sub-ID to the creator, platform and campaign name in your tracker.
- Flag clicks with no sale, sales with no click and codes used outside the campaign window.
- Ask the network about any gap above your agreed tolerance, usually a small percentage of events.
- Update the creator's next brief with one change, such as a clearer code call to action.
Common questions
How do I attribute a promo code if the viewer types it later?
Use a unique code per creator and match the redemption timestamp to the campaign window. If the platform allows it, ask the retailer for a code-level report. Network click data alone will not prove that redemption.
What is a sub-ID and why does it matter?
A sub-ID is a tracking label appended to an affiliate link. It lets you separate one creator, platform or post from another in the same network report. Without it, every click looks the same.
Can I track console store purchases?
Sometimes, but not always. Console storefronts often use their own accounts and may not pass a network click ID back to a UK retailer. Check the programme terms before you promise console attribution.
How often should I reconcile promo codes?
Weekly during a live campaign, then once more after the cookie window closes. That second check catches delayed redemptions and returns. Keep the dated reports as evidence.
