Gaming creators: how attribution methods trace a sale
Compare creator attribution methods in England across platform analytics, tagged links, offer codes, buyer surveys and controlled tests, with limits stated.
No single method sees the whole path from watching a gaming video to buying. Compare methods on the same criteria: observed action, unit, attribution window, identity requirement, missing cases, duplication risk and strength of conclusion. Use more than one column when the methods answer different questions.
The cited records were reopened on 5 September 2026. YouTube and Google Analytics documentation is global. The ICO and evaluation guidance applies in the UK. No account, link or purchase data was tested.
What to take away
- No single method sees the whole path from watching a gaming video to buying.
- Compare methods on observed action, unit, attribution window, identity requirement, missing cases, duplication risk and strength of conclusion.
- Platform analytics shows viewing and discovery but cannot prove a sponsor message changed behaviour.
- Tagged links, codes, surveys and models each miss different cases and carry different duplication risk.
- Show platform viewing, tagged actions and verified code orders separately rather than picking the largest number.
Platform-native analytics
YouTube Analytics can connect a video to its views, watch time, audience estimates and internal or external traffic categories. The unit is platform activity for a chosen content item and period. It is the best starting point for whether people watched and how they discovered the work inside YouTube.

The platform's Reach report includes search, browse, suggested, external and direct or unknown sources. It does not turn a view into a merchant sale or prove that a sponsor message changed behaviour.
Manually tagged destination links
A tagged link can place source, medium, campaign and content values into compatible website analytics. The unit is a recorded visit, session or event under the property's configuration. Use a fixed naming dictionary and one campaign ID per activation.
Google documents UTM parameters and their report dimensions in its manual-tagging guidance. Missing consent, in-app browsers, copied links, cross-device journeys and later direct visits can weaken the connection. Some reports also use different scopes.
Offer or affiliate codes
A unique code can link an eligible order or commission record to a promotion without requiring the customer to click the creator's link. The unit is usually an accepted transaction or commission in the merchant's export, measured during the agreed redemption window.
Codes miss viewers who forget them, use another offer, purchase elsewhere or share the code beyond the audience. Returns, cancelled orders, repeat customers and tax treatment also affect the value. Preserve the merchant file and reconciliation rules rather than reporting a screenshot total.
Post-purchase attribution questions
A checkout or follow-up question can capture remembered influence when clicks and codes fail. The unit is a response, not a verified media exposure. Publish the wording, answer choices, response period and response rate.
Memory, prompting, multiple influences and non-response all affect the result. An open text answer may reveal a creator that the questionnaire omitted, but it requires consistent coding and careful handling of personal information.
Use surveys as a separate self-reported measure. Do not merge them with tagged orders unless the matching basis is defined and permitted.
Analytics attribution models
Google Analytics assigns credit to touchpoints under a selected rule or algorithm. Its attribution documentation currently describes data-driven, paid and organic last-click, and Google paid-channels last-click models. The unit is model-assigned credit for a defined key event.
Model output depends on observed paths, settings and eligibility. A different model can move credit without changing the underlying purchases. State the model and date whenever a sponsor result uses it.
Use modelled attribution to analyse recorded journeys, not as independent proof of creator impact.
Controlled comparison
A planned test compares outcomes for exposed and suitable unexposed groups, or another defensible counterfactual. The unit must be the same in both groups over the same period. This asks a stronger causal question than a code or last-click report.
The UK government's Magenta Book explains the role of comparison groups and assumptions in attributing change. Small creator campaigns often face weak samples, spillover and simultaneous promotions, so limitations may overwhelm a precise-looking effect.
Use a controlled comparison only when the decision justifies the design and the audience is treated fairly.
Privacy changes the evidence available
The ICO's final tracking guidance covers tags, link decoration, analytics, consent and exceptions. Qualified review should happen before launch, not after a dashboard reveals missing data.
For a routine sponsor report, show platform viewing, tagged actions and verified code orders separately. Explain overlaps and gaps. That is more defensible than selecting whichever number gives the campaign the largest credit.
Before you act
- Compare methods on the same criteria before choosing one.
- Use a fixed naming dictionary and one campaign ID per activation.
- Preserve the merchant file and reconciliation rules.
- Publish survey wording, answer choices, response period and response rate.
- State the attribution model and date for any sponsor result.
- Get qualified privacy review before launch, not after.
Common questions
Why can a tagged link fail to connect a creator's video to a sale?
Missing consent, in-app browsers, copied links, cross-device journeys and later direct visits can weaken the connection, and some reports use different scopes. The unit is a recorded visit, session or event under the property's configuration, not a verified purchase.
What limits an offer or affiliate code as evidence of creator sales?
Codes miss viewers who forget them, use another offer, purchase elsewhere or share the code beyond the audience. Returns, cancelled orders, repeat customers and tax treatment also affect the value, so the merchant file and reconciliation rules matter more than a screenshot total.
When is a controlled comparison worth running for a creator campaign?
Use it only when the decision justifies the design and the audience is treated fairly. Small campaigns often face weak samples, spillover and simultaneous promotions, so limitations may overwhelm a precise-looking effect. It asks a stronger causal question than a code or last-click report.
