Working out gaming creator ROI with valued labour and consistent dates

Calculate gaming creator ROI in England with attributable income, direct cash, valued labour, consistent dates and a clearly labelled worked example.

Calculate return for one defined decision, such as a sponsored video, a new editing service or a three-month stream format. Use attributable income minus the full incremental cost, then divide that contribution by the same cost base. Do not substitute views for money.

This method uses illustrative figures and is not a claim about typical creator performance. Tax and VAT treatment require qualified advice. Platform and UK sources were checked on 5 September 2026.

What to take away

  • Calculate return for one defined decision using attributable income minus full incremental cost, then divide by the same cost base.
  • Keep the measurement window fixed so late results cannot flatter the project.
  • Value creator and staff hours at a documented internal rate and include them in incremental cost.
  • Test weak points such as lower affiliate receipts or longer hours instead of trusting one headline percentage.
  • Report a range or mark the outcome unknown when attribution is weak.

Choose the question and window

State the asset, platform, audience geography, publication date and measurement end. A sponsor activation may close after the contractual reporting window, while a new capture device should be assessed across several productions. Do not change the period because late results make the project look better.

Define the measurement window

  • State asset, platform, audience geography
  • Set publication date and measurement end
  • Do not change period for late results
  • Set baselinesimilar releases or approved plan
  • Keep unrelated channel growth outside result

Set a baseline. For a recurring format, compare with similar releases before the change. For a new channel, use the approved plan and label the absence of history. Keep unrelated channel growth outside the attributed result.

Build attributable income

Use invoice records, platform statements, tracked affiliate receipts and shop orders with returns removed. Separate earned amounts from cash received. HMRC's online platform guidance notes that creator activity can produce money, gifts or services, so record non-cash value distinctly rather than ignoring it.

Build attributable income

  • Use invoice records and platform statements
  • Track affiliate receipts and shop orders
  • Remove returns from income
  • Separate earned amounts from cash received
  • Record non-cash value distinctly
  • Keep commercial record and audience label

Disclosure is not optional merely because payment depends on performance. The CMA's endorsement guidance covers affiliate arrangements as well as payments, gifts and loans. Keep the commercial record and the audience-facing label with the project.

Count the incremental cost

Include freelance fees, assets, travel, additional software usage, promotion, shipping, payment charges and the business portion of equipment consumed. Add creator and staff hours using a documented internal value. Keep fixed overhead outside a campaign comparison unless the decision genuinely changes it, but show a second view allocating annual overhead if management needs full economics.

VAT should not drift between numerator and denominator. Use either VAT-exclusive figures where recovery and charging have been confirmed, or cash figures with the treatment clearly stated. The standard UK rate was 20 per cent at review, but the official VAT page warns rates can change.

Worked calculation

Assume one gaming campaign produces a £1,200 cash fee and £180 of attributable affiliate receipts after returns. Direct cash costs are £320. The creator spends 22 hours, valued internally at an illustrative £25 an hour, adding £550. Total incremental cost is therefore £870.

Attributed income is £1,380. Contribution is £510, calculated as £1,380 minus £870. Dividing £510 by £870 and multiplying by 100 gives an illustrative ROI of 58.6 per cent. This is not net profit, a tax calculation or a sector benchmark.

Test the weak points. If affiliate receipts fall to £60, contribution becomes £390 and ROI is 44.8 per cent. If the work takes 32 hours at the same internal value, total cost becomes £1,120 and the original income produces 23.2 per cent. Sensitivity is more useful than a single precise-looking answer.

Keep platform measures in their place

YouTube's Audience guidance defines reporting windows and notes that some fields can be limited. Use native analytics for views, watch patterns and audience signals, with the selected dates preserved. They can explain performance but do not prove a sale or sponsor value without an agreed attribution method.

Finish with cash contribution, labour hours, unpaid receivables, operational lessons and unpriced outcomes. Compare the result with the decision threshold set beforehand. If attribution is weak, report a range or mark the outcome unknown rather than assigning all later growth to the project.

Record the decision that follows. Continuing, changing or stopping should depend on the pre-agreed threshold and the sensitivity range, not on whether one headline percentage sounds impressive. Preserve the underlying statements and time log so another reviewer can reproduce the result.

Before you act

  • State the asset, platform, audience geography, publication date and measurement end.
  • Set a baseline and keep unrelated channel growth outside the attributed result.
  • Separate earned amounts from cash received and record non-cash value distinctly.
  • Keep VAT treatment consistent between numerator and denominator.
  • Preserve platform statements and the time log for another reviewer.
  • Compare the result with the decision threshold set beforehand.

Common questions

What income and costs go into the ROI calculation?

Use attributable income minus the full incremental cost, then divide that contribution by the same cost base. Income covers invoices, platform statements, tracked affiliate receipts and shop orders with returns removed. Costs include freelance fees, assets, travel, software, promotion, shipping, payment charges and documented creator and staff hours.

Why should the measurement window stay fixed?

A sponsor activation may close after the contractual reporting window, while a new capture device should be assessed across several productions. Changing the period because late results make the project look better distorts the comparison. The article says to state the publication date and measurement end and keep them.

How should platform analytics be used in this method?

Use native analytics for views, watch patterns and audience signals, with the selected dates preserved. They can explain performance but do not prove a sale or sponsor value without an agreed attribution method. Views should not be substituted for money in the calculation.
