Part of Building a gaming creator operation backwards from transmission
Checking a gaming stream for sound, rights, captions, moderation and handover evidence
Check a gaming video or live stream in England for technical health, clear audio, rights, disclosures, moderation, captions, files and handover evidence.
Use this checklist at three points: asset lock, full rehearsal and release. A pass means the evidence exists, not that someone remembers checking. Mark an owner beside every failed item and do not publish when identity, rights, safeguarding or account control remains uncertain.
The checklist is for teams based in England. Advertising, copyright and privacy references are UK-wide; YouTube documentation is global. Sources were checked on 5 September 2026 and platform settings need confirmation on release day.
What to take away
- A pass means the evidence exists, not that someone remembers checking.
- Do not publish when identity, rights, safeguarding or account control remains uncertain.
- Disclosure is required for paid, gifted, affiliate and own-brand material where viewers meet it.
- Copying another creator's bitrate is not a quality check because connections and production load differ.
- Close the job only after a usable file is verified and unnecessary access is removed.
Brief and ownership
- The intended viewer, game, format, destination and release time are written down.
- The output and acceptance criteria match the sponsor or internal brief.
- One person can approve scope changes, and another can stop the release for safety or control reasons.
- Contributors know their call time, role, recording status and escalation contact.
Skills England's content creator occupation joins planning, legal awareness, secure asset organisation, delivery and evaluation. Treat quality as the whole production path, not a final look at picture sharpness.
Rights and commercial clarity
- Every game clip, music cue, image, overlay and guest contribution has a recorded source and permitted use.
- Licences have been checked for platform, territory, duration and commercial restrictions.
- Paid, gifted, affiliate and own-brand material has an approved disclosure at the point where viewers meet it.
- Claims about a product are supported and do not imply testing that did not happen.
The current CMA guidance for content creators says incentives include direct payment, commission, gifts and discounts, regardless of follower count. A campaign email saying disclosure is unnecessary should be escalated, not followed.
GOV.UK's copyright page explains that permission may be required to use protected work. Keep the evidence with the asset rather than relying on a filename such as "copyright free".
Picture, sound and connection
- Speech is intelligible over game audio, alerts and voice chat.
- Fast gameplay, dark scenes and menus were included in the test.
- Scene changes, overlays and the holding screen were viewed at the destination.
- The upload route has headroom at the selected quality.
- A local recording opens and contains the tracks needed for editing.
- A fallback scene and decision-maker are ready.
YouTube's encoder guidance recommends a test with representative movement and audio, followed by live monitoring. Copying another creator's bitrate is not a quality check because connections and production load differ.
Audience experience and moderation
- The audience setting and visibility are deliberate.
- Chat rules, blocked terms and moderator access are configured.
- The moderator knows when to delete, time out, hide, escalate or preserve a report.
- On-screen text remains readable on a phone and does not cover game information.
- Flashing, loud transitions and likely content sensitivities have been considered.
YouTube documents moderator roles, slow mode and held messages, while warning that automated filtering is imperfect. Assign a human decision route for a busy live chat.
Captions, copy and links
- Names, game terms, dates and sponsor wording are correct.
- Description links lead to the intended destination and use approved tracking.
- Captions are available where planned and the archive transcript is scheduled for review.
- The title and thumbnail describe the actual content without hiding a commercial relationship.
Automatic captions can misread accents, overlapping speakers and poor audio, according to YouTube's captioning record. Never record "captions passed" merely because a CC icon appeared.
Files, security and handover
- The approved project and source media have a separate backup.
- Stream keys, passwords and private contact details are absent from shared screenshots.
- Temporary accounts have an owner and removal time.
- The published URL, key timestamps, deviations and agreed measures are ready for handover.
- The archive visibility, recording integrity and access removal are checked after release.
The NCSC's small organisations collection covers accounts, devices and backups as connected controls. Close the job only after a usable file is verified and unnecessary access is removed.
Record the result as pass, conditional pass or stop. A conditional pass needs a named action and deadline. A stop remains in place until the responsible owner supplies evidence, even when a scheduled audience or sponsor is waiting.
Before you act
- Write down the viewer, game, format, destination and release time.
- Record the source and permitted use for every asset.
- Test speech over game audio, alerts and voice chat.
- Configure chat rules, blocked terms and moderator access.
- Check description links lead to the intended destination.
- Verify a backup and remove unnecessary access after release.
Common questions
When should the checklist be used?
Use it at three points: asset lock, full rehearsal and release. A pass means the evidence exists, not that someone remembers checking. Mark an owner beside every failed item and do not publish when identity, rights, safeguarding or account control remains uncertain.
What counts as an incentive that needs disclosure?
The current CMA guidance says incentives include direct payment, commission, gifts and discounts, regardless of follower count. Paid, gifted, affiliate and own-brand material needs an approved disclosure at the point where viewers meet it. A campaign email saying disclosure is unnecessary should be escalated, not followed.
How should captions be verified?
Automatic captions can misread accents, overlapping speakers and poor audio, according to YouTube's captioning record. Captions should be available where planned and the archive transcript scheduled for review. Never record captions passed merely because a CC icon appeared.
